Compliance Layer

Draft, not final. This page was written to give customers a real, plain-language answer today. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer and must not be treated as final until it is.

Compliance Layer is a tracking tool, not a legal or compliance authority. This page explains exactly what that means for the permit and renewal data you see in the product.

This is informational, not legal advice

Nothing in Compliance Layer — permit names, descriptions, renewal cadences, dates, or any other content — constitutes legal advice. It's a tool for organizing and tracking deadlines you're responsible for confirming, not a substitute for a lawyer, licensed compliance professional, or the city's own permitting office.

Where our permit data comes from, and its limits

Every permit requirement in Compliance Layer shows a verification badge right next to it:

Even verified data can go stale: cities change permit requirements, fees, and renewal cadences without much notice. A verification date tells you when it was last checked, not that it will stay accurate forever.

You're responsible for confirming requirements

Before relying on any renewal deadline or requirement shown here — especially for a permit marked unverified — confirm it directly with the relevant city or county licensing office. Compliance Layer is not liable for penalties, fines, listing removal, or any other consequence of a missed or incorrect permit requirement, whether or not it was shown as verified.

Renewal reminders are a convenience, not a guarantee

The dashboard badges and email digest are built to help you notice upcoming renewals — they depend on the dates you or your team enter being correct, and on email delivery working as expected. Don't treat the absence of a reminder as confirmation that nothing is due.
